Abstract
Sexual harassment is a traumatic experience that can leave long-term psychological effects on survivors. Trauma cannot always be erased or reintegrated into everyday life; rather, it remains present as a residue that affects the body, memory, and social relations. This work is grounded in that understanding by using the concept of immiscibility the property of two liquids that cannot mix homogeneously as a visual metaphor to represent the experience of sexual harassment trauma. The purpose of this work is to embody the concept of immiscibility in a performance art based work, to develop a visual language that represents traumatic experience, and to produce a work capable of communicating survivors’ experiences to an audience. The creative method involves observation, literature review, exploration of oil and water based materials, exploration of bodily gestures, performance art design, video documentation, and the assembly of an immersive installation. The body is used as the primary medium, interacting directly with oil and water based materials through the technique of action painting. The entire process is recorded and processed into video art presented in an immersive space using video mapping and spatial audio systems. The presentation is complemented by artifacts from the performance art as physical traces of the performative actions undertaken. The results show that the property of immiscibility can function as a visual language to represent the experience of trauma that remains present yet never fully merges with the survivor’s life. The interaction between body, material, sound, and space produces a visual and sensory experience that affirms that trauma is not merely a past event but a layer of experience that continues to be present as residue in the body and memory. Thus, this work offers an artistic approach that employs scientific metaphor as a means of reflecting on the traumatic experience of sexual harassment through the media of performance art, video art, and immersive installation.
