Abstract

The creation of the visual art project "Weaving Wounds: The Representation of Emotional Wounds in Visual Art Using Burlap Sack Material" is based on the artist's personal experiences of emotional wounds combined with social phenomena and the historical significance of burlap sacks. The novelty of this work lies in the use of burlap sacks not only as an artistic medium but also as a symbolic material representing emotional experiences through a three-phase visual narrative of wounding, healing, and recovery. This study employed a Practice-Based Research (PBR) approach consisting of idea exploration, material exploration, technical experimentation, artwork realization, and evaluation. Burlap sacks were selected for their rough texture, vulnerability to tearing, and resilience, symbolizing emotional wounds that leave lasting marks while reflecting human strength. Tearing, stitching, patching, and weaving techniques were applied as visual metaphors for the emotional healing process. The creative outcome consists of eight installation artworks in the form of burlap garments arranged into three narrative phases. The material characteristics, stitches, tears, patches, woven elements, and spatial arrangement create a visual experience that represents the process of accepting, nurturing, and recovering from emotional wounds. This work demonstrates that the exploration of alternative materials combined with personal experience can produce artworks with aesthetic, symbolic, and reflective value.
