Abstract

"Arek" culture is a cultural identity of the East Java community, characterized by directness, egalitarianism, openness, and a strong sense of social solidarity. These values are reflected in various forms of traditional art, notably through the *jula-juli* songs performed in *ludruk* theater. Kartolo, a legendary *ludruk* artist, is renowned for his ability to convey social criticism, humor, and advice through songs that resonate deeply with the lives of the people. This study aims to describe the characteristics of Arek culture represented in Kartolo’s *jula-juli* songs and to explain the cultural values embedded within them. A qualitative research method with a descriptive approach was employed. Data were gathered through observation, interviews, documentation, and literature review. Data analysis utilized an interactive model comprising data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing/verification, while data validity was tested using source and technique triangulation. The results indicate that Kartolo’s *jula-juli* songs represent Arek cultural characteristics through the use of the Arek Javanese dialect—which is direct, communicative, spontaneous, and close to everyday life. The most dominant cultural values include egalitarianism, open communication, the courage to voice social criticism, mutual solidarity, and humor—a hallmark of the Arek community. These values are manifested through word choice, the composition of *parikan* (traditional poetic verses), storytelling style, and a candid delivery (*blaka suta*), ensuring that moral messages, social critiques, and advice are effectively received by the public. Furthermore, Kartolo’s *jula-juli* songs serve as a medium for preserving local culture, an educational tool, a means of social communication, and a way to reinforce the cultural identity of the East Javanese people.
