Abstract

ABSTRACT The creation of the theatrical directing work Samaleak was motivated by the artist’s interest in the spirit of ludruk and the social realities of society related to poverty, the exploitation of women, verbal violence, family breakdown, moral hypocrisy, and abuse of power. This work does not present ludruk in its entirety according to traditional conventions; rather, it explores the spirit of ludruk, including folk humor, kidungan jula-juli, spontaneity in performance, direct communication with the audience, and a strong sense of populist character, and incorporates these elements into a contemporary theatrical form. The objectives of this creation are to produce a contemporary theatrical performance based on the spirit of ludruk, to apply Bertolt Brecht’s alienation technique and Jerzy Grotowski’s via negativa approach in the directing process, and to create a form of performance capable of conveying social criticism while fostering a reflective experience for the audience. The creation method was carried out through the stages of exploration, improvisation, formation, and evaluation. These stages were implemented through script analysis, observation of social realities, exploration of the spirit of ludruk, development of actors’ performances, and exploration of physical, vocal, and emotional aspects, as well as the search for the dramatic rhythm of the performance. The alienation technique was applied through dramatic interruptions, direct commentary, humor, satire, and kidungan jula-juli to establish a critical distance between the audience and the performance. Meanwhile, the via negativa approach was applied through the exploration of the body, voice, and emotions, as well as the elimination of artificial performance responses, in order to achieve more organic and communicative acting. The results of the creation demonstrate that the spirit of ludruk can be developed into a contemporary theatrical form by combining elements of local tradition with modern theatrical approaches. The performance of Samaleak constructs a dramaturgy that moves between humor, emotion, satire, tension, and alienation, allowing social criticism to be conveyed not only through the content of the story but also through the form of the performance itself. Thus, Samaleak produces a contemporary theatrical directing approach based on the spirit of ludruk that maintains its populist character while developing a theatrical language that is critical, communicative, reflective, and contextual to the social realities of society.
